The ALS Association, ALS Finding a Cure (ALSFAC), and MDA announced they have jointly awarded a clinical trial grant totaling more than $2.5 million over two-and-a-half years to leading investigators at the Houston Methodist Neurological Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital. The principal investigator is Stanley Appel, MD, co-director of Houston Methodist Neurological Institute, chair of the Stanley H. Appel Department of Neurology and the Peggy and Gary Edwards Distinguished Chair in ALS at Houston Methodist Hospital, and professor of Neurology at Weill Cornell Medical College.
We are joined today by Dr. Stephen Goutman, an associate professor of neurology at the University of Michigan and the director of Michigan Medicine’s ALS Center of Excellence and Multidisciplinary ALS Clinic. The clinic was recently awarded an ALS Association Clinical Management grant to support Dr. Goutman’s important study aimed at improving non-invasive ventilation for people with ALS through the use of custom-printed 3D masks.
Stephen Hawking, the world-renowned British scientist, professor, and author, is regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists in history. But what Stephen was also well-known for was his extraordinary life living with ALS for more than 55 years. To celebrate what would have been his 81st birthday, one elementary school in Seattle is honoring his legacy by inspiring young readers to learn more about ALS while helping to fight the disease that took his life.
An avid skier, cyclist, and hiker, Father Jim has been a pastor at St. Michael’s Parish in Olympia, Washington for over twenty years. With members of the church community, he has traveled to numerous countries for both missionary work and recreational trips. A few years ago, he began having difficulties with muscle twitches, upper body weakness, and leg cramps. Before long he was diagnosed with ALS.
Dr. Bridget Stegman was diagnosed with bulbar onset ALS in February 2022. She and her family have been embraced by their community, who have showered them with love and hope as they rally together to spread awareness of this disease.

Avi works closely with The ALS Association, fundraising to ensure all people living with ALS have access to effective treatments and care. Almost completely paralyzed and unable to speak, he communicates by typing using small head movements. “My campaign to help find treatments and a cure is done primarily through a computer,” he says, “but my life is filled with joy, and I am living with ALS.”
