Discovering the Power of Support

When Diane Mummaw received her ALS diagnosis in November 2015, she was faced with uncertainty and fear. However, she found solace and encouragement through the ALS Association support group she joined the following month. Over the years, this group has become an invaluable lifeline for Diane, providing her with emotional support, understanding, and a sense of belonging. The connections she made during these meetings along with the support of her loving family helped her recognize her inherent value and reminded her that she was not alone in her journey.

Stepping Out of Comfort Zones: Becoming an Advocate

In May 2016, Diane was presented with an opportunity that initially pushed her out of her comfort zone – participating in an Advocacy Day in Washington, DC. Despite feeling apprehensive, she was inspired by the determination of others who had progressed further in their ALS journey. She decided to embrace the challenge, telling herself, "If they can show up and do this work, I need to do this as long as I can do it."

Initially, Diane felt disheartened, as it seemed that the advocacy efforts were focused on a seemingly unattainable goal – waiving the waiting period to apply for social security disability benefits. However, her persistence paid off, and when the change finally materialized, Diane was elated to discover that her input had made a significant impact. Seeing her name as part of the congressional record reinforced her sense of belonging and being part of something greater than herself.

Over the years, Diane has actively participated in two in-person advocacy days in Washington, DC, and engaged in two virtual sessions. Her commitment to advocacy remains steadfast, as she hopes to continue making a difference for as long as possible.

Living with ALS: Overcoming Hurdles and Finding Strength

Reflecting on her journey with ALS, Diane shares a powerful insight – "Everyone wants you to live longer. But the longer you live, the more hurdles you have to overcome." Despite facing numerous obstacles, Diane's determination remains unwavering, and she credits her family, friends, and former colleagues from the insurance industry for supporting her in hosting an annual golf tournament. Their support fuels her advocacy efforts, empowering her to advocate not only for herself but also for others facing ALS.
